“German Gold is
the artist with a heart bigger than life, a Jewish theologico-philosophical
outlook at the world, a brilliant Russian artist
with warm feelings and affection toward people and nature. You got to love this
man who has so many qualities, virtues, goodness and immense talent. Two
elements constitute his human fabric: Talent and humility. To me, German is a mixture of Leo
Tolstoi, Victor Hugo and Titian. A great master who walks tall among great
masters. I love this man.” wrote Maximillien de La Croix.
Judaica
tell us:”German spent the best part of his life in the province in the Ukraine
and took a strong liking to it. He soaked himself in everyday life of the
province: life without immoderations, strong demands to himself and others, and
keeping away from splashes of modern movements in society. “
The whole network of art works of Gold reproduces
that provincial - patriarchal Jewish world that was burnt to ashes and
disappeared after "Satan's return" mentioned earlier. The author tries to reproduce the life of his
"fathers" and at the same time shows love of sons to their
"fathers". His portrait, landscape and so-called historical genre art
reproduce
specific material
creation. The eye of an artist dwells on all concrete features, signs and
characteristics of an "object", on its all life eurhythmics, and its
main goal is to explain, or better to say, make that object clear.
The portraits of German Gold are real, sincere, and deep art. To
reproduce the character of a person is the most important and difficult task of
the artist, but Gold makes it like an expert. Only the real painter-psychologist
is able to choose those features in the portrait that deal with the essence of a
character and hide those that appear by chance. The one more particular feature
of Gold's portraits is an
importance of
person's existence in general and quite often tragedy of this existence. Here is
the person's face, and here is his or her whole life - the author tries to show
all this and does it brilliantly. Portraits of Gold are the following of that
kind of paintings where there is a mixture of portraits similarity with
biographical one.
"There was a world and that world was ruined" - says in his
mind one of the hero from
"White
Guards" looking at some painting. Artist Gold respectfully and
strictly-convincingly depicts that lost world.
